The UMMS Geriatrics Interest Group (GIG) is organized and run by first and second year medical students and has been in place since the implementation of the 2001 John A. Hartford Foundation Grant, Enhancing Gerontology and Geriatric Medicine Edication in Undergraduate Medical Education. GIG activities include community-based screenings for older adults, shadowing oppotunities with geriatricians, and lunch-time lectures by academic geriatricians.

Funding from the Reynolds Foundation supports GIG by providing a modest stipend for the student leaders of the group and for administrative support to assist with arrangements for speakers and the development of additional community-service related activities with elders.

Proposed GIG activities include additional health screenings for osteoporosis, depression, cognitive impairment and fall-risk for older adults at a variety of sites. Currently, GIG enrollment averages twenty first and second year medical students.
