UMass Department of Psychiatry – helping individuals and families transform their lives – conducts world-class research on the nature and causes of a range of mental illnesses from substance abuse and addiction, to schizophrenia and autism spectrum disorders, among other subject areas.

With more than 300 faculty members, the department is a national leader in public-sector psychiatry; a rich source of expertise and research about:

  • Child and adolescent brain development and psychiatric disorders
  • Addiction issues, including alcohol, tobacco and other drugs
  • Homelessness among military veterans – prevention and intervention techniques, including smartphone technology, to help them get and stay mentally well
  • Psychotic depression
  • Suicide risk detection, intervention, prevention and its aftermath, including consolation measures for children and family members and training for public safety, emergency response (EMTs) and military personnel
