Geriatric Nursing Initiatives

The Graduate School of Nursing Geriatric Nursing Initiatives include the federally funded projects, Enhancing the Acute Care Nurse Practitioner and Adult Nurse Practitioner Programs with a Geriatric Specialty and Comprehensive Geriatric Education and Mentoring Across Settings (Co-GEMS). These projects focus on improving the quality of care and health care outcomes for older adults through the education of advanced practice nursing students and other health care professionals in hospitals, assisted living facilities, and nursing homes. The program preparing geriatric advanced practice nurses is the Dual Track Geronotological Nurse Practitioner Specialty.

The GSN was awarded a grant from the American Association of Colleges of Nursing and John A. Hartford Foundation through, Creating Careers in Geriatric Advanced Practice Nursing initiative that provided scholarships to selected students. The focus of this initiative was to educate advanced practice nurses committed to leading the care of older adults.

The GSN is partner of the Rosalie Wolf Geriatric Interdisciplinary Health Care Research Center. This center is an interprofessional collaboration between the Graduate School of Nursing at the University of Massachusetts Worcester, Division of Geriatric Medicine at the University of Massachusetts Medical School, and the Gerontology Institute at the University of Massachusetts Boston.
