Capstone Scholarship & Discovery Course 

COURSE DESCRIPTION

The goal of the Capstone Scholarship and Discovery (CSD) course is to provide students with the support to build on a personal passion that existed prior to entering the field of medicine, or to identify and develop a new one encountered after matriculation through a mentored scholarly project in one of the School of Medicine’s core competencies (Physician as Professional, Scientist, Communicator, Clinical Problem Solver, Advocate and Person). This work is called the Capstone Project (CP) and is completed as a graduation requirement receiving credit through the CSD course.

All components of the CSD course and scholarly project (SP) are graded credit/no credit. As this is a graduation requirement students must remediate any non-credit grade prior to graduation.

COURSE OBJECTIVES

  1. Create a uniform opportunity for all students to follow an individual passion consistent with one of the six UMMS medical education competencies.
  2. Support UMMS students and their advisors as they execute a mentored scholarly project.
  3. Foster analytical thinking skills and the development of tools for rational decision making for UMMS students.
  4. Provide role models, mentorship, and guidance for students regarding careers that integrate research, service, teaching, clinical service.
  5. Present scholarly pursuits to students as endeavors that involve collegial interaction.
  6. Enhance the medical school culture of self-directed and peer group-fostered learning.
  7. Develop oral and written communication skills of graduating medical students that are important to the profession of medicine.
  8. Demonstrate effective dissemination and public presentation of scholarly work.
  9. Cultivate a spirit of lifelong scholarly inquiry among UMMS students.
