Long-Term Care

Long-term care is increasingly happening in communities rather than institutions — and experts in UMass Medical School’s Commonwealth Medicine division are performing the integral role of evaluating community care and researching ways to improve it.

In community-based care settings, disabled and elderly populations have the opportunity to live, work, and participate fully in their communities and experience a better quality of life. Our teams are currently evaluating such programs in three states that are aiming to provide high-quality, cost-effective support services.

The Commonwealth Medicine division, particularly through the experts in our Long-Term Services and Support unit, has led a wide range of studies on long-term care, and has developed a strong portfolio of work related to community-based support systems. Our areas of expertise include the following:

  • Applied research to support long-term care policy development
  • Strategic planning in long-term care policy
  • Home- and community-based services
  • Consensus-building between policymakers and stakeholders
  • Education about disability
  • Evaluation of long-term care programs and services
