Behavioral Health

Improving the lives of people with behavioral health conditions demands research initiatives that lead to real-world solutions. As part of the University of Massachusetts Medical School, Commonwealth Medicine researchers are not content to simply report on the vast and complex issues facing individuals with mental health and substance abuse issues. We apply and disseminate knowledge that make a difference in the lives of consumers and service providers.

Behavioral health conditions affect individuals of all ages and from all walks of life. Caring for this population requires the resources of numerous public agencies and services. Our Center for Mental Health Services Research - within the Medical School's Department of Psychiatry, and the Center for Health Policy and Research Center for Health Policy and Research - within Commonwealth Medicine, bring a wealth of research expertise, helping a variety of public agencies and service providers improve critical care to this diverse population. Its core research areas include such crucial topics as mental health and law, psychosocial rehabilitation, and children, youth and families.

With its ongoing training programs and presentations, the Center for Mental Health Services Research is further able to impart practical learning to mental health consumers and those who work with them - from emergency first responders and police to advocates and clinicians.

Our capabilities are further strengthened by the strategic planning, policy evaluation, and research expertise provided by our Center for Health Policy and Research.
