Exploring Health Careers
Studies show the nation is currently in the midst of a health care workforce crisis, and without a concerted effort by those seeking to improve the overall health care system, the situation is unlikely to improve dramatically. Commonwealth Medicine is dedicated to reversing this trend by creating opportunities for youth to learn about, and find inspiration for, careers in a medical field. One of the most effective ways to improve access to quality health care for all people is by providing interested youth, particularly those who are economically disadvantaged, with the academic and professional tools they need to pursue health careers. By participating in a variety of school-to-health career programs, and with the support of the University of Massachusetts Medical School, youth are given the opportunity to discover what a career in medicine, nursing or other health or human services discipline may hold. These activities can include mentoring, job shadowing, clinical and research internships and after-school science programs.
In fact, youth can play an integral role in reducing and eliminating health and educational disparitiesÑboth personal and in their communities. Youth benefit personally by becoming more academically competitive, while the community enjoys a more competent and diverse health care workforce.
