Thomas Manning is a founder of Commonwealth Medicine, a division within the University of Massachusetts Medical School (UMMS) devoted to assisting state agencies to improve health care services delivered to vulnerable populations, and continues to provide a guiding vision for the organization's operations and employees as its leader. He also serves as Deputy Chancellor for UMMS.
Mr. Manning was instrumental in the creation of Commonwealth Medicine and its mission to direct the school's public service mission by addressing health policy issues and the health-related needs of vulnerable populations through partnerships with public health and human service agencies at the local, state and federal levels.
Previously, Mr. Manning served as the Chief Operating Officer and Vice Chancellor for UMMS. He has also served as Associate Hospital Administrator for Mental Health Affairs for the former University of Massachusetts Medical Center and as administrator for the Medical School's Department of Psychiatry.
Mr. Manning has been active in mental health services in Massachusetts for nearly 20 years. In 1993, he was presented the prestigious Commissioner's Special Commendation for outstanding service, advocacy and dedication to the delivery of high quality mental health care by the Massachusetts Department of Mental Health. He is also a 1998 recipient of the Manuel Carballo Governor's Award for Excellence in Public Service.
Mr. Manning received a bachelor's degree in psychology and a master's degree and CAGS in Rehabilitation Counseling from Assumption College in Worcester. He currently serves on the Board of Assumption College.
