Research Interests
Research in the laboratory is aimed at understanding the cellular response to viral infection, primarily from RNA viruses like dengue and yellow fever. The regulation of genes expressed during infection using differential display techniques would lead to the discovery and design of gene arrays particularly useful in the study of infection. Among the problems that viruses like dengue have is that their pathogenesis is not well understood, and therapeutic interventions do not exist at this time. Therefore, understanding the nature of the pathogenesis of dengue virus is a goal that we are trying to achieve.
The laboratory focuses on primary monocyte infections, and the exploration of inflammatory responses including chemokine receptors and chemokines. The laboratory also participates in the transfer of technology for the advancement of science in the Third World, by active participation in exchange and scientific activities outside the U.S.
