Monika Mitra, Ph.D.
Research Scientist, Center for Health Policy and Research
Monika Mitra has extensive experience in health and disability research as well as in program evaluation. As a as Research Scientist at the Center for Health Policy and Research, she studies disability, employment, and health. Through the Center’s Massachusetts Medicaid Infrastructure and Comprehensive Employment Opportunities (MI-CEO) grant, funded by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, she manages research and evaluation projects focused on improving competitive employment opportunities for working-age adults with disabilities.
Dr. Mitra’s interests also include health inequities between people with disabilities and the general population, the epidemiology of secondary conditions among persons with disabilities, and issues related to health promotion and health care access for people with disabilities. Highly regarded as an expert in health and disability data in Massachusetts, Dr. Mitra is an Assistant Professor of Family Medicine & Community Health at UMass Medical School.
Prior to joining the Medical School in 2010, Dr. Mitra worked as Senior Epidemiologist with the Office on Health and Disability at the Massachusetts Department of Public Health. There, she played a vital role in the integration of disability as a demographic indicator in all of the Department of Public Health’s programmatic and surveillance initiatives. She was a key team member in several vital Massachusetts-based surveillance and programmatic projects: the Youth Health Survey, the Mammography Access Project, the Office on Health and Disability Strategic Plan, the Survey of Unmet Needs of Adults with Disabilities, and the Survey of Secondary Conditions.
Dr. Mitra received master’s and doctoral degrees in geography from Boston University. She also holds a master’s degree in regional planning from Calcutta University, in addition to a bachelor’s degree in geography and economics. She previously held an appointment as Instructor at Boston University.
