Our History

UMass Medical School’s Center for Health Policy and Research is dedicated to the vision of becoming a leading global academic and translational research center.

With a long-standing tradition of excellence in research, evaluation, education, and clinical support dating back to 1997, the Center for Health Policy and Research now encompasses a variety of innovative new initiatives as well as established, respected programs. These programs are models for colleagues within our organization and for clients at home and abroad.

MassAHEC Network (Area Health Education Center)
Established in 1978, the MassAHEC Network, with offices in Boston, Brockton, Lawrence, Springfield, Pittsfield, and Worcester, recruits, develops, and trains a diverse base of health care professionals who are committed to practicing in underserved communities across the state.

New England AIDS Education Training Center (NEAETC)
Established in 1988, NEAETC serves Connecticut, Massachusetts, Maine, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, and Vermont and is one of 11 regional AIDS education centers nationwide.

Office of Community Programs (OCP)
Established in 1994, OCP develops and provides educational resources, health care services, partnerships, programs, and technologies for public health and managed care organizations in response to community and public health concerns and community.

Office of Clinical Affairs (OCA)
Established in 1996, OCA partners with the Massachusetts Medicaid program (MassHealth) to provide clinical decision support and pharmacy services that assure the delivery of clinically-effective, high-quality, and cost-efficient health care for more than 1 million citizens.

Center for Developmental Disabilities Evaluation and Research (CDDER)
Established in 2000 and located at the Eunice Kennedy Shriver Center, CDDER is a pioneer in research, education, and service for people with developmental disabilities and their families.

In addition, research design and methods, state health policy analysis, and long-term care policy are well-established areas of expertise within the Center for Health Policy and Research.

The Center for Health Policy and Research will continue to leverage its long tradition of developing groundbreaking theoretical knowledge and translational research to improve the health and well-being of people served by public health and managed care organizations, from the bedside to the community.
