Medical education is an essential and enduring commitment of the Department of Cell Biology. Cell Biology faculty have been leaders in the overall development of the newly implemented LiNC curriculum, whose major goals include integration of both basic and clinical disciplines across all four years, and guiding students toward assuming greater responsibility for their own learning. Departmental faculty have participated extensively in the medical school curriculum by designing and participating in new courses, developing new educational resources, creating innovative approaches to teaching and assessment, and participating in research and scholarly work that focuses on teaching and learning.
Currently our faculty members collaboratively lead, and participate extensively in, three major first-year courses-- Building Working Cells and Tissues, Principles of Human Genetics, and Development, Structure and Function (histology, anatomy, embryology, physiology, imaging) -- and a major second-year course Brain: Nervous System and Behavior. Departmental faculty are also involved in other course offerings within LinC, including various advanced basic science components being planned for years three and four.
Departmental efforts in education are enhanced by a highly skilled education support group, whose members provide essential administrative and technical contributions.
Faculty in Cell Biology have received a continuous stream of awards for teaching, educational innovation, and leadership in medical education for many years. These include Chancellor’s and Dean’s Awards, recognition for innovative approaches from the schoolwide Educational Policy Committee, and awards presented by the student body, as well as honors from national organizations.
