How many first-year fellowship positions does UMass have?


Does UMass participate in the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP)?


May I send my application directly to UMass?

No.  All applications must be directed through ERAS for consideration.

What are the requirements for consideration?

    1. ERAS Application.
    2. Must have completed an ACGME-certified internal medicine residency prior to starting fellowship. 
    3. USMLE transcript demonstrating passing scores on steps 1 and 2.
    4. Three letters of recommendation, one of which must be from the program director of the internal medicine residency.
    5. Personal statement
    6. Ability to obtain a Massachusetts license to practice medicine.

Is there a minimum board score for applicants to be considered?

While there is no absolute cutoff for consideration, applicants with low scores are unlikely to be granted interviews unless other aspects of their applications are unusually impressive.

Do you accept applicants who are on H and J visas?

Applicants who are currently on H or J visas are welcome to apply.  However, we do not initiate the visa application process for those who do not already have a visa.

What is the deadline for applications?

All application materials must be received by August 15th.  Interviews take place in September and October.

Where to fellows perform their rotations?

The vast majority of time is spent at the main UMass campus, known as the University campus, in Worcester.  Fellows spend one month at a community hospital located 20 miles north of Worcester and at least two weeks studying advanced heart failure at Tufts Medical Center in Boston.

Are there options for further training at UMass?

UMass has one-year, ACGME-accredited fellowships in interventional cardiology and electrophysiology.  Fellows at UMass who wish to stay for a fourth year of training will usually spend a large portion of their third year in sub-speciality training.  The interventional and EP fellowships are also available to physicians who have completed a three-year general cardiology fellowship elsewhere.
