Watch for:
Monday, July 31: 8th Floor Clinical Science Wing Elevator Lobby project to begin
On Monday, July 31, a project to replace floor tile, ceilings and lighting in the elevator area on the 8th Floor of the Clinical Science Wing of the Medical School will begin. Overnight from 5 p.m. on July 31 to 8 a.m. on August 1, when the floor tile is being removed, the elevator lobby and adjacent hallways and offices will be inaccessible and it will not be possible to cross from the Clinical Science Wing of the Medical School to the hospital or vice versa on the 8th Floor.
After 8 a.m., Tuesday, August 1, through Monday, August 7, 8th floor Medical School offices and meeting rooms will be accessible. However, for infection control purposes, the doors leading to the hospital will be closed off. Individuals who need to access the hospital must take Staircase 9 down to the 7th floor, where they can use to the Hospital elevators or Staircase D to reach the 8th floor of the hospital.
Other elevator lobbies will be renovated beginning in September, at a rate of one floor (one-week closure) each month.
Tuesday, June 27: Restroom renovation to begin
As part of a continuing effort to modernize the facilities on the University Campus, a two-phased project to renovate restrooms on the first floor of the Medical School will begin on Tuesday, June 27. The project will include painting and the installation of new tile, lavatories, counters and toilet partitions.
In the first phase of the project, the men's and women's restroom nearest the Basic Science Elevators (across from the student mail boxes) will be closed from June 27 through August 4. During the second phase of the project, the restrooms nearest the Clinical Science Elevators will be closed from August 7 through August 21. Please note that these dates are approximate and are subject to change.
Please contact Julie Grace at 508-856-8405 or via email with any questions about this project.
Thursday, April 6: Spring and Summer Work
For information on upcoming spring and summer construction, take a look at this Q & A.
The Clinical Entrance doors to the Medical School (near the Credit Union) have reopened. After normal business hours (6 a.m. to 6 p.m.), the entrance will only be accessible to staff and students with valid identification badges. Please note that the new ambulance bay is located just outside this entrance, and as such, there is significant vehicular traffic. Pedestrians should be alert to incoming ambulances and use caution when crossing the roadway. Also note that there is no longer a designated smoking area behind the Medical School. The primary designated smoking area on campus is housed along the pedestrian walkway in front of the Hospital West entrance.
Although the Clinical Entrance has reopened, the Clinical Parking Lot on the University Campus will remain out of service through the spring. In addition to accommodating construction activities for the third floor of the Lakeside Expansion, the closure will allow for the parking and pedestrian area to be refurbished. The sidewalks will be replaced, the lot will be repaved, restriped and reconfigured and new lighting and access controls will be installed. Those with reserved parking privileges in the Clinical Parking Lot will continue to park in previously designated areas until the lot reopens this summer.

This month, UMass
Medical
School
will begin a three-year project to modernize all service and passenger elevators in the school and hospital buildings. The $5 million project, paid for through the Shared Infrastructure Fund of the Medical School and UMass Memorial Medical Center, is to make all of the elevators in use on campus more efficient, functional and aesthetically compatible with our academic health science center.

New Medical School Entrance & Lobby Open
| This week, Campus Modernization celebrated a major milestone with the opening of the new Medical School Lobby and entrance and the extensively remodeled Faculty Conference Room.
The new entrance creates a distinctive and easily recognizable "front door" for the Medical School, as well as a useful shared space with the Faculty Conference Room; it also creates a visual contrast, accented in blue, to UMass Memorial Medical Center’s copper-hued new main entrance. While the actual square footage of the Faculty Conference Room remains the same, there have been significant structural, organizational, audiovisual and, most prominently, aesthetic improvements. Among the most striking features are the three monumental doors that allow the lobby and Faculty Conference Room to be linked for special occasions.

Pedestrians will also notice a major positive change in the environment outside of the Medical School entrance. As part of the first phase to implement the recently completed Master Plan for the campus, the former asphalt roadway has been removed and replaced with interlocking pavers. The paved area will now be maintained as a pedestrian mall, but will remain accessible for emergency or ceremonial occasions.
