Advanced Center for Clinical Education and Science
UMass Medical School has envisioned a plan for growth and development on the University Campus that is essential to our mission of national distinction in education, patient care, research and service with our clinical partner, UMass Memorial Health Care. The next step in the plan is the construction of the Advanced Center for Clinical Education and Science (ACCES). The seven-story, 258,000-square-foot building will house a mix of clinical areas, providing much-needed space for UMass Memorial. The building is expected to be complete in about two years.
The structure will attach directly to the west side of the South Road Garage, which was designed to accommodate the addition of this building. Architecturally, the façade of the ACCES resembles that of the Lazare Research Building.

Unlike the Lazare Research Building, for which the building shell and the interior designs were final at the start of construction, the shell and core of the ACCES will be constructed as plans for the interior continue to be developed and finalized--a strategy that allows for accelerated occupancy of the space. The shell and core are expected to be complete by the summer of 2008, at which time construction of the interior spaces is scheduled to begin.
Additionally, ACCES will house the recently established Department of Quantitative Health Sciences, which will be located among resources to be determined as the project advances. The new department, which fosters collaboration among existing clinical and basic science entities with the goal of shortening the time between laboratory breakthroughs and clinical applications, is integral to the UMass Medical School's research vision and aligns with a recently identified priority of the National Institutes of Health.
UMass Memorial will lease several floors of new facility to accommodate a number of separate ambulatory clinics. The clinic space will incorporate state-of-the-art patient care resources, and the clinical system team will be actively involved in determining and designing the facilities of these two floors.
The new facility will also house campus support services on the first level, including relocation of the credit union and possibly a coffee shop.
These Web pages will be updated as needed throughout the construction of the ACCES. Be sure to check back for news.
