The 2012 GSBS Student Achievement Awards were held last Friday in the Faculty Conference Room. Four graduate students from BMP Labs were recognized for their outstanding research, mentoring and community service. Ozlem Yildirim in the Rando Lab shared the Dean’s Award for the Most Insightful Doctoral Thesis Research with Hugh Gannon. Ozlem’s Ph.D. thesis examined chromatin dynamics in pluripotency and differentiation. The Dean’s Award for the Most Insightful Mid-thesis Research also went to a BMP graduate student, Ryan Hietpas. Ryan’s work in the Bolon Lab uses high-throughput sequencing technology to systematically analyze the fitness landscapes of proteins vital for cell survival and disease progression.

Heidi Malaby (Kobertz Lab) was recognized for bringing science demonstrations to Worcester area middle high schools. Heidi and her fellow GSBS students were recently highlighted in UmassmedNOW. Their outreach group has a Facebook page that helps the group organize upcoming events and provide judges for state science fairs. Rounding out the BMP winners was Divya Iyer, a second year graduate student in the Rhind Lab. Divya received the Outstanding Mentoring Award in the Classroom and Research Setting. This is second award for Divya—last year she was awarded the 2011 GSBS Curriculum Achievement Award.

Congratulations to all of our GSBS award winners and 2012 graduates!!!
