My path into anesthesiology was a bit indirect. I went into medical school assuming that I would be a "regular" doctor, and I actually completed my training in internal medicine. All through my training, however, I found that I particularly enjoyed performing technical procedures, and I enjoyed being in the operating room when I had the opportunity. (I never, of course, even remotely considered becoming a surgeon!) I soon realized that a career in anesthesiology would allow me to combine the areas of medicine which I find the most fulfilling, and I have never regretted that decision.

Currently, I work primarily at the Hahnemann Ambulatory Surgery Center. The focus there is somewhat different than at the main University Campus. The cases are relatively short, although some of the patients have a number of complex medical issues, and the emphasis is on rapid turnover and prompt discharge home.

I was in private practice for a number of years before joining the UMass system in 2001. Interacting with residents has helped keep anesthesiology fresh and interesting for me.
