The Integrated Geriatrics Curriculum includes the development and implementation of required geriatrics curricula and experiences within the Foundational Studies, Learning Communities, Longitudinal Themes, Core Clinical, and Senior Studies components of the redesigned Learning-Centered Integrated Curriculum (LInC).
Piloted as the Elder Patient Navigator Program through the 2009-2010 academic year, the Navigator Program in Geriatrics is now offered as an Optional Enrichment Elective in the medical school curriculum during which first and second year medical students and graduate nursing students accompany older adult patients to their ambulatory clinical appointments. Students are also recruited by the UMMS Geriatrics Interest Group (GIG) student leadership to volunteer as Student Navigators (SN). The program offers the opportunity to assist elder adults to navigate through the health care system, while broadening the health literacy and communication skills in both the patients and the students. After receiving training in health literacy and communication techniques, the SN meets individually with an elder prior to their medical appointment, attends the visit with the patient and provides a debriefing following the visit. As described in the Journal of the American Geriatrics Society article by Dr. Sharon Levine and colleagues from Boston University School of Medicine (J Am Geriatr Soc 56:1140-1145, 2008), chief residents are uniquely positioned to influence peers and transform care. While chief residents play a crucial role in training residents and students, they may have limited geriatrics training. Building on the efforts of the Geriatrics Section at Boston University School of Medicine, UMMS has implemented a Chief Residents Immersion Training (CRIT) in the Care of Older Adults.
