Participant Recruitment, Assessment and Characterization Services

The Clinical and Translational Research Support core works with investigators to recruit, screen, and enroll participants for individual projects. The core also provides participant assessment and characterization services via a neuropsychologist or consultants.

Recruitment & Enrollment

The Core develops and maintains relationships with community-based organizations and clinicians to assist in recruitment efforts.  Examples:

  • Massachusetts Down Syndrome Congress
  • Massachusetts Special Education Parent Advisory Council
  • Arc of Massachusetts
  • Family voices
  • Local YMCA's, Boy & Girls Clubs
  • Specialized clinics at UMass Medical School, Mass General Hospital and Tufts Medical Center
  • Other community-based organizations, schools, agencies, and practitioners
  • Outreach/coordination on community education events

The Core conducts recruitment via multi-media outlets such as:

  • Online postings to special needs parent discussion boards
  • Support groups
  • Community bulletin boards
  • Craigslist
  • Newspapers and community-access television advertisements reaching cities and towns in the metropolitan Boston area
  • Recruitment materials (brochures, flyers, etc.) for funded studies, which can be designed by Core staff.  Click here for a  sample brochure.

Participant Assessment & Characterization

The Core provides participant assessment and characterization services via a neuropsychologist or consultants.  Testing expertise includes (but is not limited to):

  • Differential Abilities Scale (DAS)
  • Vineland-II
  • Kaufman Brief Intelligence Test-2 (KBIT-2)

  • Wechsler Instelligence Scale for Children - Fourth Edition (WISC-IV)
  • Peaboday Picture Vocabulary Test (PPVT)/ Expressive One-Word Picture Vocabulary Test (EOWPVT)
