Worcester Campus
Master of Public Health Program

Admission Requirements

Applicants for the MPH degree program should have either an advanced degree in a health related discipline (medicine, nursing, social work, etc) or 2-3 years of appropriate experience in a health related field as determined by the admissions committee.

In addition applicants must meet the general requirements of the Graduate School:

  • a bachelor's degree from an accredited college with an undergraduate GPA of at least 2.75;
  • two original transcripts from all undergraduate institutions;
  • two letters of recommendation;
  • a personal statement describing your reasons for pursuing the MPH degree;
  • GRE scores:

The Graduate School waives the GRE requirement for applicants with a doctoral level degree received from a U.S. accredited school, but the MPH program reserves the right to require the examination in selected cases.

Foreign applicants must submit TOEFL examination scores and GRE test results unless they have taken the USMLE or ECFMG.  GRE scores are valid for 5 years.  For more information on the GREs, call 800-473-2255 or visit their website at http://www.gre.org .

Applicants intersted in applying should visit the Graduate School Web site  or go to http://www.umass.edu and follow to the Graduate Admissions section.  Applications can be submitted online or downloaded and mailed in.  To request information on the application, please contact Linda Hollis, Program Coordinator at 774-442-6499 or email her at Linda.hollis@umassmed.edu

Be sure to write "Worcester Campus MPH Program" where it asks for program so that the application will go to the correct campus.

Students may also take courses on a non-degree basis and transfer them into the program if accepted as long as the grade is a B or better.  A total of 12 credits can be transferred as long as 2 of the courses are Principles of Epidemiology and Introductory Biostatistics.  Please note, however, that successful completion of courses as a non-degree student does not quarantee acceptance to the program.  Please make sure you meet the admission requirements before investing in the program as a non-degree student.

All MPH students are required to complete a three-credit practice experience as a degree requirement.  However, a student can petition for a waiver for the practice requirement based on previous, documented experience.  All students, including those who receive this waiver, must complete 42 credits.  For more information on the practicum requirement, please see:  http://www.umass.edu/sphhs/MPHPracticumStudentHandbook_000.htm
