Preventive Medicine

Section 2: Knowledge (basic knowledge required in all areas; extensive knowledge in at least one area) 

• Etiology and prevention of communicable diseases, chronic diseases, occupational/environmental conditions, injuries, accidents, pre-natal and peri-natal conditions
• Models of individual and group health-related behavior and behavior modification, methods for individual, community and population based needs assessment
• Models for community organizing and advocacy, strategies for increasing access to primary and preventive care, methods for improving quality of care
• Impact of managed care on access to preventive services, access to preventive services in special populations
• Research methods appropriate for studying health promotion and disease prevention, including descriptive, cross-sectional, case control, prospective and retrospective cohort studies and clinical trials
• Models for administration and management of public health programs, including budgetary, financial and personnel management
• History, organization, function, economics and politics of the public health and medical care systems in Massachusetts and the USA
• Global health care issues and strategies for addressing lack of access to primary and preventive services in developing countries
