UMASS MEDICAL SCHOOL BREAKS GROUND FOR ADVANCED EDUCATION AND CLINICAL PRACTICE CENTER
258,000-square-foot-building will add much-needed academic and clinic space to University Campus
DECEMBER 7, 2009
WHAT: The University of Massachusetts Medical School (UMMS) will launch another dramatic expansion of the University Campus with a groundbreaking ceremony to mark the start of construction for the Advanced Education and Clinical Practice Center (AECPC) on December 7. To be built next to another recent addition to campus—the Patient/Visitor Parking Garage—the seven-story AECPC will add more than 250,000 square feet of clinic, office and classroom space for the benefit of both the Medical School and its clinical partner, UMass Memorial Health Care. Construction is anticipated to be complete in two years.
As currently conceived, the AECPC will house:
- The UMMS Center for Experiential Learning and Simulation: Essential to keeping UMMS on the forefront of health sciences education, the Center will offer the latest in an array of simulation technology, including virtual reality trainers and simulation mannequins, and will also incorporate the institution’s renowned Standardized Patient Program.
- The recently established Clinical and Translational Science Department: The new department, which fosters collaboration among existing clinical and basic science entities with the goal of shortening the time between laboratory breakthroughs and clinical applications, is integral to the institution’s research vision.
- UMass Memorial clinical space: UMass Memorial will occupy two floors of the AECPC, with plans to accommodate two separate ambulatory clinics, most likely for oncology and heart and vascular services. The clinic space will incorporate state-of-the-art patient care resources.
- Additional space for campus support services
Consigli Construction, a construction manager and general contractor serving academic, corporate, health sciences, and institutional clients throughout New England, will provide both pre-construction and construction services for the project. Consigli previously completed a number of construction projects on behalf of UMMS and UMass Memorial, including the Patient/Visitor Parking Garage to which the Advanced Education and Clinical Practice Center will be connected.
Payette Associates, one of the nation’s premier architect/engineering firms for health care and academic institutions, will serve as the project architect. Payette Associates most recently completed the design of the University Campus façade replacement, new lobbies and entrances and the exterior of the Duddie Massad Emergency and Trauma Center. WHO
