“Mindfulness is a common-wealth”
Dear Friend,
This year marks the 30th anniversary of the founding of the Stress Reduction Clinic—three decades of leadership in integrating mindfulness and meditation in mainstream medicine, health care, and the broader fabric of society. As you reflect on these 30 years with us, I remind you that behind all of our accomplishments there stands a bigger story—genuine collaboration with our supporters. Your commitment and kind generosity have always been the keys to our success.
In 2009, we are engaged in a year-long celebration of our past successes as we simultaneously look ahead with great enthusiasm to the next level of our work. I invite you to celebrate this moment with us. Please join us by making a 30th anniversary donation which expresses the importance that this work of mindfulness holds in your life and heart. Consider making your donation in honor of a person who has inspired your practice and we will send him/her a beautiful card acknowledging your gift. In this gesture, you widen the circle of giving.
Over the years the support of our friends has been essential to our becoming the vibrant and effective organization we are today. At each stage of our development your gifts have provided us with the encouragement and vital resources needed to move forward with our work.
We thank the many foundations, organizations, and the thousands of people whose contributions have sustained our work. Approximately 80% of our annual budget comes from program revenues. For the remaining 20%, we depend on your generosity which is essential for our long-term financial health and for the fulfillment of our mission.
Our intention over the next year is to develop dynamic physical and virtual environments for our work to flourish and deepen, with particular emphasis on projects within our six key areas of activity, which your generosity will benefit:
Patient Care: We will continue to direct our attention to being the standard of care for mindfulness-based stress reduction (MBSR) worldwide while simultaneously training highly qualified teachers for our Stress Reduction Clinic here at UMass Medical School.
Professional Education: Oasis- our Institute for Mindfulness-Based Professional Education and Innovation will continue to pursue a worldwide mandate of cultivating the next generation of mindfulness-oriented health professionals in Asia, Africa, Europe, and North and South America.
Research: We look forward to recruiting a new director of research in the coming year, with the goal of enriching and expanding the research agenda of the Center, including the development of a collaborative fellowship and training program for interdisciplinary researchers from all over the world.
Annual Scientific Conference: Over 400 attendees of our 2009 conference had the opportunity to participate in the highest quality scholarly and scientific offerings, including keynote presentations by Drs. Margaret Chesney, Richard Davidson, Carolyn Jacobs, Saki Santorelli, and Jon Kabat-Zinn.
SAVE THE DATE: Our 2010 conference is scheduled for April 7-11-- we hope to see you there.
Mindfulness in Education: Continuing and expanding upon the groundbreaking pilot program that integrates MBSR and Courage to Teach® at the Columbus Park Preparatory Academy in Worcester, Massachusetts, we will bring these same techniques and insights to students and teachers at other public and private schools in New England.
Mindful Leadership and Corporate Programs: In addition to continued offerings of our Mindful Leadership Programs to Fortune 500 companies, 2009 will see the expansion of our Mindfulness in the Workplace Programs, focusing on productivity, communication, and innovation.
