Thank you for your interest in the University of Massachusetts (UMass) Medical School and our affiliated hospitals. We invite fourth year medical students attending Allopathic and Osteopathic accredited medical schools in the USA and Canada to apply for our wide range of fourth year electives.

ELECTIVE INFORMATION
UMass electives are offered in four-week blocks of time. The approved Elective Calendar is posted on our website at: http://umassmed.edu/studentaffairs/electives/forms/index.aspx.

A maximum of 2 four-week electives (8 weeks) are allowed per student each academic year.

Beginning in AY 09/10, UMass will be using VSAS (the Visiting Student Application Service) to receive applications.   For more information on VSAS, go to www.aamc.org/vsas

UMass will begin accepting applications on April 1st; however, applications will not be considered until May 1st.  Priority in scheduling electives is given to UMass students until May 1st of each academic year.  All applications received before May 1st will be keep on file and processed in the order in which they were received.

** Elective applications must be submitted to the Office of Student Affairs to receive elective credit. **
** Elective applications should be submitted at least eight weeks before the start of a requested elective. **


ELECTIVES OFFERED / ADMINISTRATIVE FEE

A $65 non-refundable administrative fee is assessed for each approved elective.  Payment should be made payable to the 'University of Massachusetts Medical School' and is expected within ten [10] days of the elective being accepted.  For students accepted into the Minority Resident Recruitment Program, [see program information below] the administrative fee for one 4-week elective will be waived.
VISITING STUDENTS FROM U.S. LCME ACCREDITED SCHOOLS
Applications for AY 09/10 is through VSAS only and must include:
   · The completed VSAS application (www.aamc.org/vsas)
   · CV
   · Transcript
   · Photo
   · Mail completed Visiting Student Immunization Record Form & attach your lab reports

VISITING STUDENTS FROM CANADA and U.S. OSTEOPATHIC  / AOA ACCREDITED MEDICAL SCHOOLS
Application is made by mailing the UMMS Visiting Student Application found on our website at: http://umassmed.edu/studentaffairs/electives/forms/index.aspx
  • Complete Section I of the Visiting Student Application and forward it to your Home School Official for completion and School Seal.
          Your application must include the following:
  • Letter of Good Standing from your Dean of Students or Registrar addressed to Mai-Lan Rogoff, M.D.
  • Verification of Passing Step 1 of the USMLE or COMLEX level 1. (Can be included in the Letter of Good Standing).
  • Verification of HIPAA & OSHA Training. (Can be included in the Letter of Good Standing).
  • Completed Visiting Student Immunization Record Form and attach lab reports, documenting proof of immunity to Measles, Mumps, Rubella, Tetanus/Diphtheria, Hepatitis B
  • Verification of Health Insurance (Can be included in the Letter of Good Standing or include a copy of your Health Insurance Card.)
  • Malpractice Insurance/Liability Insurance Limits. (Can be included in the Letter Good Standing or include a copy of your malpractice insurance
    certificate.)
  • Proof of a TB Test within one year to arrival of rotation.

RESIDENT RECRUITMENT PROGRAM FOR MEDICAL STUDENTS UNDERREPRESENTED IN MEDICINE
This program is offered to 4th year underrepresented medical students.  For more information contact Janice Robert at Janice.robert@umassmed.edu.


INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS
The University of Massachusetts Medical School accepts requests for electives from students at other schools of medicine with whom UMass has an established exchange program.  For more information, please contact Mick Godkin at @michael.godkin@umassmed.edu.


IF YOUR ELECTIVE APPLICATION IS APPROVED:
  · You will be sent an e-mail confirmation offer (VSAS or paper application)
     containing information about your approved elective.
   · This offer will be valid for five (5) business days.
  · You will be requried to "accept" this offer before the deadline, or the offer will be rescinded.

IF YOUR ELECTIVE APPLICATION IS NOT APPROVED:
We make every effort to accommodate elective requests, however there are occasions when applications cannot be honored.   If your elective was not approved, you will be notified by e-mail with an explanation of why your application was denied.

CANCELLATIONS:
If you are unable to report to your approved elective, you must e-mail the elective coordinator and Janice Robert (janice.robert@umassmed.edu) at least 1 month prior to the start of the elective.

HOUSING:
UMMS does not provide housing; however, we often have information on available sublets.   If you'd like a copy of this information, please e-mail Janice.Robert@umassmed.edu.  Please note, UMMS does not endorse or verify information on sublets, this information is provided as a courtesy only.

EVALUATIONS FORMS:
Please give a copy of your school's Evaluation Form directly to the Coordinator of the approved elective.

PARKING & PICTURE ID BADGES:
  ·  Electives at the University Campus, you will be required to obtain a Picture ID Badge from the Public
      Safety Office on Level A of the Hospital (508-856-5631).
   · Monthly Parking Tags for University Campus are also available from the Public Safety Office for a fee.
   · For information regarding ID Badges and parking at affiliated sites, please check with your elective
     coordinator or the public safety office at that site.
