Intensive Training in Motivational Interviewing
The Center for Integrated Primary Care is proud to offer a course in Motivational Interviewing designed for a variety of healthcare professionals.
Motivational Interviewing is a critical skill for healthcare providers who wish to:
- Encourage patients to set and achieve goals for health maintenance and disease management
- Facilitate tobacco cessation
- Engage patients in active (non-pharmacological) management of chronic pain
- Address issues of problematic alcohol, opiate, and other drug use
- Improve patient's medication adherence
Participants who complete the course are awarded a Certificate of Intensive Training in Motivational Interviewing. Medical students who enroll in the course will participate alongside attending physicians, psychologists, fellows, residents, and nursing students.
The training consists of 5 group sessions, with time between each session to allow the learner to integrate the skills into practice and build on these skills in subsequent sessions. The group sessions include active strategies appropriate for adult learning and the development of a clinical competence, such as Motivational Interviewing. Learners will practice their skills, engage in discussions, and view demonstrations.
The training includes individual practice of skills with a trained Acting Patient, who will allow the learner to practice new skills in a safe and supportive environment. These practice experiences can be scheduled at the learner's convenience. Each learner receives written feedback on their strengths and opportunities for improvement. In addition, each learner receives 2 sessions of individual coaching with an expert in Motivational Interviewing.
