I studied electrical engineering as an undergraduate and worked in the computer and industrial ultrasound fields before my medical career. It was when I was contemplating graduate engineering school that I realized I wanted to become a physician to help others.
After medical school at Brown University and an initial start in general surgery, I changed specialties to anesthesia. I found anesthesia to be better suited to my strengths and personality. My time in general surgery was not wasted though. It helped me greatly during my anesthesia residency, and it was a rotation in pediatric surgery that would eventually lead me to pediatric anesthesia.
I did my pediatric anesthesia fellowship at the Boston Children’s Hospital and stayed on staff at Children’s for 11 years. While I was there, I was a member of the acute pain service and director of the pediatric regional anesthesia group.
Now here at UMass, I am serving as the Director of Pediatric Anesthesia. As director it will be my goal to maintain and continually improve the medical care for our pediatric patients.
