Dawn Carone Honored with 2012 Zelda Haidak Memorial Scholar Fellowship
The Department of Cell and Developmental Biology is pleased to announce that Dawn Carone is the recipient of the 2012 Zelda Haidak Memorial Scholar Fellowship. This award was established by the late Dr. Gerald Haidak to honor his beloved wife. The award supports the training of a female trainee in Cell Biology.
Dawn has been a postdoctoral associate in Jeanne Lawrence’s lab since September 2009. She is a recipient of an F32 NIH/NCI Ruth L. Kirschstein NRSA Postdoctoral Fellowship. Dawn has investigated aberrations in heterochromatin structure in cancer cells and uncovered locus-specific overexpression of a pericentric satellite, which may be a potential biomarker of a wide range of human cancers. She has also uncovered a mechanism involving DNA demethylation that is responsible for repeat-specific protein sequestration.
