Starlight Celebration Raises $80,000 for Children’s Medical Center
UMass Memorial Children’s Medical Center (CMC) presented the Starlight Celebration, its annual fundraising gala, on Saturday, October 23. Nearly 300 friends of the CMC enjoyed an exquisite evening of great food, fun and an exciting auction, raising approximately $80,000 in support of the CMC Pediatric Intensive Care Unit.
Hosted by Wagner Motors, this elegant and unusual venue was a spectacular way to demonstrate that UMass Memorial is the “Driving Force in Children’s Health Care.” Wagner Motors was selling cars until 5:00 pm and by 6:30 pm, the two showrooms had been transformed into an extraordinary venue for an elegant evening. We are so grateful for their support throughout the advanced planning and the evening of the event.
Kathryn Marous, who spoke on behalf of our 2010 STAR Family, shared how having a Children’s Medical Center in their own backyard was critical when their son, Teddy, was involved in a car accident and suffered severe head trauma. She spoke movingly of her family’s experience in the PICU. She thanked all the staff and in particular mentioned, Oguz Cataltepe, MD; Christy Stine, MD; PhD; Pat Vanesse, LICSW; Frances Wood, CCLS; and Scot Bateman, MD. She brought tears to everyone’s eyes. She reported that one Boston doctor whom she turned to when she questioned being in Worcester told her, “When Dr.Cataltepe came to UMass, it was not the best thing to happen to neurology in Worcester. It was the best thing to happen to neurology in Massachusetts. If my son had an injury like Teddy’s, I would be on the Mass Pike out to Worcester to see him. Stay put.” And she went on, “Dr. Bateman, who regularly sees kids closest to death, had tears in his eyes over my baby. And I realized that he was competent but not hardened. And this humanity is what makes him a truly great doctor.” The care she received from the physician staff was top-notch, but she also talked about the support staff, without whom she could not have made it through this difficult time. All of this a true testament to the comprehensive and compassionate care provided by the Children’s Medical Center.
Shaun Todorov, on behalf of the Todorov Family, was pleased to accept the 2010 Shining Star Award. The Todorovs were honored with this recognition for their donations of beautiful murals on 5 East and many gifts in prior years through the Elizabeth Todorov Toy Drive.
