Visiting Student Scholarship (formerly Residency Recruitment Program, or RRP)

 

Scholarship Description

UMass Chan Medical School offers visiting medical students from disadvantaged backgrounds the opportunity to participate in a four-week clinical elective in one of several departments: Dermatology, Emergency Medicine, Family Medicine, Internal Medicine, Medicine/Pediatrics, Neurosurgery, Obstetrics and GynecologyPlastic Surgery, Pediatrics, Radiology, Surgery and Urology.

Students will be able to participate in educational and clinical activities that are offered to all students and meet with leadership, faculty and residents for mentoring on career interests.

In addition, the accepted students will receive a stipend of $1,500 to help offset their elective transportation expenses, food, and housing along with reimbursement of their $106 visiting student administrative fee. Please note applications need to be submitted at least two months prior to scheduled electives. Students must have been accepted for an elective in VSLO in order to qualify for the scholarship.

The Diversity and Inclusion Office works in collaboration with the T.H. Chan School of Medicine Office of Student Affairs and the Graduate Medical Education Office in supporting the Visiting Student Scholarship.

Eligibility

To qualify applicants must meet the following criteria.

  • Be a 4th year medical student enrolled in an accredited medical school in the USA, Canada or Puerto Rico.
  • Be a U.S. Citizen or Permanent Resident.
  • Have a record of good academic standing.
  • Be approved for a visiting student elective at UMass Chan Medical School (VSLO)
  • VSS supplemental applications must be received two months prior to the start date of your elective.
  • Come from a disadvantaged background (including but not limited to socioeconomically disadvantaged, first-generation college student, experienced homelessness, faced educational disadvantages, disabled person, etc.)

How to Apply

*Students must first apply in VSLO® for an away rotation at UMass Chan Medical School. Applications must be received two months prior to the start date of your elective. You must be accepted for an elective in VSLO in order to qualify for the VSS. You can, however, submit the VSS supplemental application at any time after your VSLO application is submitted. We will keep it on record until we are able to review it.
