Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine Fellowship
UMass Memorial Health Care's Neonatal-Perinatal Unit (Level III) is the obstetric, pediatric, family practice, and emergency room resident training/teaching unit for the University of Massachusetts Programs in Obstetrics/Gynecology, Pediatrics, Family Practice, and Emergency Medicine which are accredited core programs.
The Division of Newborn Medicine has longstanding partnerships in perinatal care, training, and collaborative research with UMass Chan Center's Divisions of Maternal-Fetal Medicine and Medical Genetics as well as the broader UMass Chan Center campus. The close professional ties between the NICU fellows and the faculty of the three Divisions allow for innovative research, diagnosis, and therapy of the fetus and newborn, resulting in a superb multidisciplinary training environment for our fellows. Our clinical network enables us to expose our trainees to a high-risk population with a broad range of high-acuity diagnoses. Exposure to chronic care aspects and connection to primary providers is also guaranteed through our network, which is covered by our faculty.
The Neonatal Fellowship is supervised by the Director, Lawrence M. Rhein, MD, MPH (Chief of Neonatology) and based at UMass Memorial Health Care which is the tertiary center for Region II designated by the State of Massachusetts for high-risk neonates and pregnancies. The fellowship is offered to either USA/foreign medical graduates who have completed an approved three year pediatric residency or met ACGME approved standards. The fellowship is for 36 months.
A full spectrum of follow-up services for high-risk NICU graduates is provided at the Center for Healthy Infant Lung Development, and the NICU's High-Risk Infant Follow-Up Program, which provides comprehensive developmental and respiratory evaluation services and follow-up assessments for randomized trials and clinical care.
